Fruit Vegetable Production and Breeding Group

The Fruit Vegetable Production and Breeding Group aims to develop new cultivation methods for stable production of protected vegetables, and new vegetable varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tohoku region.

Protected Cultivation: Our main purpose is to develop cultivation methods of summer and autumn-harvesting strawberry for stable and high-yield production in the Tohoku region. We have investigated the flowering properties of ever bearing strawberry varieties, and developed fertilizer application methods for summer and autumn-harvesting strawberry. In the 4th mid-term plan, we try to develop year-round strawberry cultivation methods suitable for the Tohoku region.

Vegetable Breeding: In vegetable breeding, our purpose is to develop new vegetable varieties suitable for the Tohoku region. So far, we have developed many varieties such as "Natsuakari" (strawberry), "Toyoyukihime" (strawberry), "Suzukoma" (tomato) etc. In the 4th mid-term plan, we try to develop new varieties of ever-bearing strawberry, late bolting Chinese cabbages, and spring sowing onions suitable for the Tohoku region.

Strawberry variety "Toyoyukihime" can be harvested during cool early summer
in the Tohoku region
