Disease of Common vetch

Gray mold
Causal organism: Botrytis cinerea Persoon:Fries, Imperfect fungi
Fungal disease to infect the entire upper-ground part. It occurs at the ground side of the plant which grows thickly and water-soaked small spots is formed in the leaf and stalk. Then, the whole plants soften and collapse to brown. Gray molds grow bristly in the rotted part. It occurs severely at the high temperature and humidity. Resistance to the disease of common vetch is comparatively strong than hairy vetch.

Rust
Causal organism: Uromyces ervi Westerndorp, Basidiomycotina
The rust disease occurring from spring to early-summer. Faint-orange and round swellings, about 0.5mm in diameter are produced in the backside of leaves. The epidermis tears when maturing and it disperses reddish brown urediniospores and spreads. The lesion produces teleutospores in July.

Causal organism: Ascochyta punctata Naoumow, Imperfect fungi
Fungal disease occurring mainly in the rainy seasons in spring and autumn. It occurs in the entire upper-ground part such as leaf, stem and pod, etc. The lesions are at first chocolate colored spots in the leaf and then become round to oval ones of 2-5 mm in diameter. Since the center part of the lesion turns to grayish white later, the lesion looks like surrounded by brown borders. The infected leaves drop soon. Black small grains (pycnidia) are produced on the old lesion and spores disperse from them.

Diseases of Trefoil

Phytophthora root rot (undescribed disease in Japan)
Causal organism: Phytophthora medicaginis Hansen et Maxwell, Mastigomycotina
Fungal disease causing root rot and plant death of Japanese birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. japonicus). It occurs in spring and autumn and the damage is large particularly in June. The occurrence in birdsfoot trefoil (L. corniculatus) has not yet confirmed. The most adequate temperature for growth of the pathogen is about 30C on artificial media.

Stemphylium leaf spot
Causal organism: Stemphylium loti Graham, Imperfect fungi
Fungal disease causing spots in the upperground part. It occurs from autumn to winter and mainly in the leaf, petiole and stem. The lesions are at first light brown and sinking a little. They enlarge and become round lesions of about 5 mm in diameter. The clear zonation appears in the lesion and the surroundings become water-soaked and faint green. The infected leaves easily drop. The lesions are copper colored and long spindle shaped in the stem.

Summer blight
Causal organism: Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, Basidiomycotina

Diseases of Chinese milk vetch

Leaf blotch
Causal organism: Cladosporium astragali Yamamoto, Iwayama et Saito, Imperfect fungi

Leaf spot
Causal organism: Stemphylium astragali (Yoshii) Yoshii, Imperfect fungi

Powdery mildew
Causal organism: Microsphaera astragali (de Candolle) Trevisan, Ascomycotina

White leaf spot
Causal organism: Tuberculina nomuriana Saccardo
