Causal organism: Commelinaceomyces aneilematis (S. Ito) E. Tanaka, Ascomycotina
The disease occurs in Hokuriku District, Japan. Marsh dayflower is a weed occurring in paddy fields. In late summer, the flowers in infected shoots begin to enlarge and are filled with orange-yellow to olivaceous green dusty spore masses. The causal fungus belongs to Clavicipitaceae and phylogeically close to Villosiclava virens causing false smut in rice. The new genus, Commelinaceomyces was recently proposed.
