Japanese Fungi on Plants No.18 before next top

Claviceps sorghicola Tsukiboshi, Shimanuki & Uematsu
Classification: Ascomycota, Pyrenomycetes, Hypocreales, Clavicipitaceae

Distributed south from Kanto, the central part, and recorded only in Japan. Causes ergot disease on Sorghum plants producing ergot (sclerotia) on the panicles. Ergots drop on the ground, overwinter and easily germinate with stromata in the next spring. Disperses by scattering conidia produced in the honeydew from the diseased flowers.

Characteristics: Plant pathogen   Symptom: JPEG (Sorghum, Ergot, Inoculated, 44kb)

Morphology:
Teleomorph: Producing stromata with a brown stipe and dark brown capitula, 4-18 mm in height from blackish purple ergot (sclerotia). Ascocarp embedded on the surface of capitula, pyriform, producing cylindrical asci inside. Ascospores hyaline, filiform, 92-205 x 0.5-1 um.
Anamorph: Many conidia produced on the surface of sclerotia and in the honeydew, hyaline, ellipsoid, 5-11 x 2.5-3.8 um. Secondary conidia have not been reported in nature.
