[Moonshot] Dr. Ryo Sugiura, presented the IPM Project in the Workshop organized by Asia and Pacific Plant Protection Commission (APPPC) (August 31, 2022).

A presentation was made by Dr. Ryo Sugiura on the Project for integrated pest management (IPM), which aims at plant pest controls with less chemical use. The Project is led by the Project Manager Dr. Norihide Hinomoto (Professor, Kyoto University) under the Moonshot R&D Program, Goal 5 (Sustainable Food Supply). This took place on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, in the week-long Workshop organized by Asia and Pacific Plant Protection Commission (APPPC) held in Incheon, South Korea, as a part of reginal activities supported by International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) community.

Dr. Sugiura, Unit Lead of Image Recognition, National Food and Agriculture Organization (NARO) provided the updates on the project with a focus of laser shooting with AI as well as other emerging methods such as enhanced use of symbionts and biological control agents, i.e. natural enemies.

Over 40 participants as well as those from the IPPC and APPPC Secretariat welcomingly commented on the importance of innovative approaches. They also expressed their specific interests and asking questions on how to identify insect species to avoid mis-shooting of bees and other useful insects, the frequency of shots to address the mass occurrences, among others.

Under the IPPC annual theme "Plant health innovation for food security", other presentations included:

  • remotely controllable insect traps by Mr. Teppei Shigemi and Ms. Minako Ikawa from Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
  • Moonshot R&D Programme, Goal 5 (Sustainable Food Supply) by Mr. Yukio Yokoi from BRAIN
  • Updates of Fall Armyworm by Mr. Yubak Dhoj from APPPC Secretariat
