Hokkaido Agricultural Research Center, NARO

Department of Large-Scale Upland Farming Research

In the large-scale upland farming areas of Hokkaido, we are developing technologies for labor-saving production and stable supply of crops such as wheat, legumes, potatoes, and sugar beets. Our department has seven groups: the "Smart Field Crop Rotation Group", "Field Farming Information and Engineering Group", "Climate Change Adaptation Group", "Agri-environmental Pest Management Group", "Wheat Breeding Group", "Potato Breeding Group", and "Regional Crop Breeding Group".
These groups are working on the following challenges:

  • Development of efficient, rational production technologies based on information of aerial field environment or crop imagery, meteorological data.
  • Development of technologies to avoid and overcome production risks such as weather, diseases, and pests.
  • Breeding of varieties such as wheat, potatoes, sugar beets, and buckwheat.
