Tohoku Agricultural Research Center (TARC) aims to promote technological development for the advancements in agriculture and food industry taking full advantage of the abundant natural resources of the Tohoku region, constituting the northern portion of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. The center promotes research and technological innovations focusing on the establishment of highly productive paddy field farming, coping with and utilizing cold climate, enforcing the circulatory functions of the agriculture and livestock industries, and enhancing health functionality and attaining safety and security.
NARO-FAO/IAEA International Symposium (Remediation of Radioactive Contamination in Agriculture: Next Steps and Way Forward)
We will introduce the results of radiation countermeasure researches, including a project commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for the reconstruction of the disaster area, from NARO, the countermeasures after the Chernobyl nuclear accident from IAEA, and advanced technologies such as ICT from both organizations. The research findings discussed and shared at this symposium will contribute to the countermeasures for radioactive cesium contamination in the areas affected by the nuclear power plant accidents.
Publication of a remote greenhouse monitoring system configuration manual

NARO has published a manual for the reference of installation of "the remote greenhouse monitoring system". The "Kayoinougyo Shien System" is a remote monitoring system that allows the user/farmer to check agriculture information (Temperature inside the greenhouse, etc) on smartphone by combining a microcomputer with communication function and a small personal computer. By referring to this manual the system can be installed inexpensively and easily which enables the user to save labor in managing the greenhouse.
NANOHANA Open Day 2019
The Tohoku Agricultural Research Center, NARO (TARC/NARO) is organizing NANOHANA Open Day 2019 on May 11 & 12, 2019. The rape plants (nanohana) are grown to prevent repeated cultivation failure in the experimental breeding fields for wheat and barley, and for green manure production at TARC. Various activities will be held such as exhibits of research achievements and efforts on breeding rape cultivars. TARC is the only institute in Japan continuously working on rapeseed breeding. Improvement of rice yield prediction in a higher CO2 world by multiple crop models

A study by researchers at NARO with 18 organizations in nine countries found that multiple crop simulatiom models provide reliable estimates of rice yield in higher CO2 levels in the atmosphere. The study tested 16 rice simulation models against the observed yield under elevated CO2 concentration. The yield prediction response varied significantly among the different models, but the averaged predictions agreed well with the observations suggesting that the effect on rice yield can be accurately predicted using multiple prediction models. The improvement of yield prediction will be an important basis for developing countermeasures against climate change.
