Overview
The NARO R&D activities follow the "Basic Plan for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research" developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). The mid-term plan is implemented for five years, and the accomplishments of each research program are evaluated annually by the NARO evaluation committee and then by the MAFF evaluation committee. To promote various research of NARO, external evaluation on the research quality and direction of specific programs from international perspectives by overseas reviewers has been undertaken from the third mid-term plan (FY2011-2015). In the international peer review process, overseas experts and specialists in related research areas are invited as reviewers to evaluate the research projects based on the results' quality, direction, and applicability to the agriculture and food industry. In October 2024, an international peer review meeting was conducted by top-level researchers to evaluate the key achievements of the 5th mid-term plan period (FY2021-2025), particularly in research areas that should lead on an international level. The review aimed to assess research outcomes and their practical applications, and to receive recommendations on future research directions.
