Overview
Fruits are one among the prides of Japan. For example, the "Fuji" apple variety which was first developed by breeding in 1939, is currently cultivated not only in Japan but also in major apple producing countries, getting the largest share in production volume throughout the world. There is no exaggeration in saying that result of breed improvement has led to innovations in the apple industry. This public lecture will focus on how apple production has developed since the Meiji era, and also on the contribution of research in the development of improved varieties and cultivation techniques.
