Public Lecture

Title

Exceptional companions of Azuki beans!

Speaker

Ken NAITOU
Senior Researcher,
Plant Variety Protection Section
Center for Seeds and Seedlings, NARO

Overview

The genus Vigna consists of as many as 108 related species including some well known cultivated species such as azuki beans. However, since most species are naturally growing weeds, almost no one will take a closer look except researchers or plant enthusiasts. Actually, many related species of azuki are well adapted to different environments conditions including severe environments where other plant species could not survive such as seashores, desert, rocky limestone etc. Those growing on the beach are strong against salt damage, and those growing in the desert are naturally strong against drought. Therefore the Vigna and related species could provide the ideal plant materials that can be used for developing crops with strong resistance against salt damage and drought. In this lecture, the future prospects for research involving the many species of Vigna will be discussed.
