The "Russia-Japan Workshop" of the STS forum (Science and Technology in Society forum) was held online on December 8, 2021. The workshop has been held since 2020 in cooperation with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Russian Innovation Center "Skolkovo" and other partners in order to activate science and technology exchanges between Japan and Russia.
Dr. Nakatani, who participated in the Session 2 "Agro Technologies" of the workshop (17:45-19:00, JST) as a panelist, introduced the governmental innovative strategy for smart agriculture and a green food systems that will embody Society 5.0 in Japan. He also presented the efforts and outcomes of R&D by NARO.
The other panelists were from Economics-Skolkovo (Russia/Emcee), Tokai University (Japan), Federal Antimonopoly service (Russia), Russian union of Grain Exporters (Russia), and Greenland Japan Ltd. (Japan).
The panels discussed about the ways to build a sustainable agriculture system on a global scale by leveraging Russia's strengths (abundance of natural resources) and Japan's strengths (technological development capabilities) related to Russia-Japan agriculture and food industries.
Dr. NAKATANI revealed that "promising (appropriate implementation of technologies)" and "challenging (continuing to challenge for technological innovation)" are the keywords that express the stance of NARO in Russia-Japan collaboration.
