08. Identification of the gene responsible for surface exposure of cell-wall linked proteins in Streptococcus suis

Japanese

We found five genes (srtA, srtB, srtC, srtD and, srtE) encoding proteins homologous to sortase, an enzyme responsible for surface exposure of cell-wall linked proteins, in the type strain of Streptococcus suis NCTC10234. Among the five genes, srtA was found to encode the sortase. On the basis of the N-terminal amino acid sequences of the cell-wall proteins which were missing in srtA knockout mutants, we identified three novel genes encoding cell-wall linked proteins in S. suis.
