Department of Citrus Research promotes research with the aim of strengthening the international competitiveness and ensuring the sustainable development of Japan's citrus-producing regions, with a focus on the stable supply of high-quality fruit that is highly valued both domestically and internationally.
Specifically, to develop new varieties that achieve both high quality and stable production under climate change, we carry out planned crossing programs and trait evaluations, while also developing highly accurate selection and prediction methods using DNA markers and genomic information. At the same time, we are establishing strategic systems for the conservation and management of genetic resources to enhance future breeding capacity.
We are also advancing research to build sustainable and stable production systems by developing labor-saving and high-yield cultivation techniques that address extreme weather conditions and labor shortages, as well as by utilizing AI and sensors for growth management and automating field management operations.
Furthermore, by promoting the adoption of the NARO S. Multi cultivation system, evaluating the cultivation characteristics of newly developed cultivars, and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), we are accelerating the introduction of innovative technologies into commercial production. Through these efforts, we contribute to the stable supply of high-quality citrus fruit and enhance the competitiveness of Japan's citrus-producing regions.
