Extreme weather events, widely recognised as consequences of climate change, are having increasingly serious impacts on agricultural production and rural communities worldwide. In response to these challenges, global efforts are accelerating towards carbon neutrality, aiming to achieve a decarbonised society in which greenhouse gas emissions are balanced by removals. Japan has declared its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and under its Green Transformation (GX) strategy, the agricultural sector is expected to play a key role by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, advancing resource circulation, and enhancing productivity while reducing environmental impacts.
Within this context, the Resource Utilisation Research Division conducts research on assessing, utilising, and sustainably managing regional resources in rural areas, including energy resources, land and water infrastructure, and biomass. Particular emphasis is placed on technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation associated with agricultural production. Beyond the development of individual technologies, the Division focuses on system-level optimisation and regionally tailored implementation strategies to maximise their effectiveness. Through these efforts, the Division aims to generate scientific knowledge and practical solutions that contribute to both a decarbonised society and the sustainable development of agriculture and rural regions.
