On February 21, 2013, a workshop was held in Tokyo concerning the Convention on Biological Diversity ("the Nagoya - Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety"), as an area meeting for the exchange of ideas aimed at establishing an appropriate system for each country. On the 22nd, twelve foreign officials including the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and officials from several countries (India, the Philippines, Malaysia, France, Latvia, Mexico, Colombia), as well as eight Japanese government officials representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, paid a visit to NARO as part of the workshop.
NARO described the organization, breeding strategies for various plants, and the progress research using genetic modification including the development of the blue chrysanthemum. Then the guests visited the Crop Genomic Breeding Research Facility of the NARO Institute of Crop Science (NICS), and showed a keen interest in NARO's breeding projects.

Dr.Kentaro Kawaguchi (on the left), Senior Researcher in NICS, introduced the Crop Genomic Breeding Research Facility and related research projects.
