Updated:October 30, 2015 (Friday)

On October 5th, 2015, we had visitors from far away Sweden: 15 PhD students from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, led by Professor Göran Thor.
Dr. Shimoda, senior researcher of the Plant Protection Division, NARO/ARC, delivered a lecture entitled “How can we control agricultural pest insects without pesticides?”

As a new experiment, PhD students from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences put on presentations for NARO. Professor Lena Gustafsson provided an outline of the university’s research and 5 PhD students delivered presentations on various themes: biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes, resource use efficiency in annual and perennial crops and so on.

Afterwards there was a lively discussion between NARO and NIAES researchers and the visitors.
The visitors toured the Tsukuba agriculture research hall and crop sample garden, as well as the National Resources Inventory Museum of NIAES. They seemed to enjoy learning firsthand about current developments in Japanese agriculture and we were pleased to be able to show them our work.

We will continue to organize educational visits by international scientists in order to strengthen our scientific relationships with other countries.
