Utilizing the weather prediction information to develop climate risk management technology for agriculture

Updated:August 5, 2016 (Friday)

In the field of agriculture, weather plays an important role and has a large impact on crop procucrion. Various research studies have been conducted to develop climate risk management techniques for agriculture. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) have conducted a joint research covering a period of 5 years from FY 2011 to FY 2015on the advancement of agricultural technology information utilizing climate prediction information to accurately determine the impact of weather in agriculture practically.
Prediction of weather information of about 2 weeks to one month in advance from the Japan Meteorological Agency and by utilizing the temperature prediction information, crop warning information is sent in the Tohoku region which will contribute to the reduction in the failure of paddy rice due to cold weather and high temperature. In western Japan, improvement in the countermeasures of wheat disease named Fusarium head blight by means of accurate prediction information of the critical flowering period were also obtained.
The NARO, on the basis of the joint research results, aims to develop early warning and cultivation management support system for the whole country, and put it to practical use in the next three to five years. The Japan Meteorological Agency published the results of this joint research as a successful case studies of utilization of climate information. The JMA and NARO will continue our efforts to spread the utilization technology of climate information in various sectors.
