Updated:August 5, 2016 (Friday)

Tsuyuakane is a Japanese apricot (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc.) cultivar released in 2009 by the National Institute of Fruit Tree Science (NIFTS). It was selected from seedlings obtained from the cross of the Japanese plum (P. salicina Lindl.) 'Kasahara hatankyou' and the Japanese apricot 'Youseiume'. It was subjected to the 2nd national trial of Japanese apricot at 15 experimental stations in 14 prefectures in Japan as Ume Tsukuba 10 from 1999. It was named 'Tsuyuakane' and registered as No. 17,561 under The Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act of Japan on February 26, 2009.

From 2009, the fleshy delicious red plum 'Tsuyuakane' is grown in some of the production areas. By taking advantage of red color, sales of processed products such as plum wine and plum juice has been started. In the future, we expect a wide range of application such as ingredients for cooking, sweets etc.

In order to ensure further expansion of production and use of the "Tsuyuakane" cultivar, NARO has opened a web page providing various types of information on this cultivar. With the cooperation of various research institutes, links to information such as breed characteristics, research results concerning the cultivation method have been added. Also for the use of farmers we have added the information of original and processed products. Various recipes such as pasta, gelato ice cream, jam etc.have been added for the usage of consumers. The database is available here in Japanese only.
