Model for predicting a stable green world in the terrestrial ecosystem

A mathematical model that can be used to predict the density of herbivores and carnivores in the ecosystem has been developed by Dr. Kotaro Konno (Insect Plant Interaction Unit, Division of Insect Sciences), and described in a paper published in Ecological Monographs. This model quantitatively determines the amount of pests (herbivores) generated in the farmlands under various conditions, including the extent of damage to crops caused by natural insect enemies (carnivores). The experimental data obtained can be used to predict the quantitative variation of pests and natural enemies in the field and should provide a useful resource for development of effective pest control technologies.
