NARO Diversity and Inclusion

NARO creates innovations by the power of diversity in human resources

Agriculture and food industries are facing drastic change worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses in food supply chain and reminded people about the importance of food security.

In agriculture and food industries, labor shortage, decline of local community, frequent occurrence of natural disasters and global warming are imperative challenges. Meanwhile, the global food market is predicted to expand along with the huge increase in world population. Therefore, we need to accelerate our efforts toward sustainable development for people and the earth.

I believe that agriculture and food industries have great potentials to grow large and can contribute to regional revitalization and economic growth of Japan. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, including animal husbandry, and land use account for as much as 24% of global emissions, therefore the agriculture is a key to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

After my appointment as the president of NARO in 2018, I have set the NARO's objectives as follows: NARO will contribute to

1.  The stable supply of agricultural products and food, and raising food self-sufficiency rate
2.  Strengthening the global competitiveness of Japan's agriculture and food industry
3.  Improving agricultural productivity while conserving the global environment
toward realization of Society 5.0 in the agri-food sector.

These objectives are completely in line with Japan's Government policy, which aims to raise "farm exports to 5 trillion yen in 2030" and to become a "carbon-neutral society by 2050," as well as "Measures for achievement of Decarbonization and Resilience with Innovation: MeaDRI", formulated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

In order to achieve these objectives, it is important to promote "diversity and inclusion" in human resources: foster a culture that respects and integrate diversity in gender, nationality, career, scientific expertise (agricultural sciences, engineering, informatics, humanity, social science), and business expertise (management, planning, intellectual property/standardization, and business development).

It is also important to accelerate progress toward the achievement of work-life balance by improving working environment in which each person can maximize their abilities.

NARO strongly promotes "diversity and inclusion" and work-life balance.
