Development of environmentally friendly approaches in plant protection for sustainable agriculture

Objectives

The international peer review meeting aims to provide an independent assessment of the research programs of NARO based on the scientific quality, originality and direction from the view point of overseas reviewers, and to make an overall evaluation on the potential impact of the research results to the food and agriculture industry. For FY2017, three ongoing research programs, namely, plant protection, animal husbandry, and biological function were evaluated. The research program on plant protection focused on the theme "Development of environmentally friendly approaches in plant protection for sustainable agriculture".

Review Process

The peer review is carried out by evaluating the scientific quality, originality and specific direction of the research project, and applicability of the research results to the food and agriculture industry. Each research project is evaluated with the following rating. S: high quality and no revision needed; A: good quality and minor revision needed, B: fair quality and moderate revision needed, C: fair quality and major revision needed, D: poor quality and a complete rewrite needed. Additionally, the peer reviewers provide rating, comments, suggestions and recommendations for each research project and the entire research program.


Research Projects

  • Project 1: Management of migratory insect pests in monsoon Asia and the quarantining of pests
  • Project 2: Development of an assay system for plant pathogens and insect pests with resistance or tolerance to agrochemicals and associated management strategies
  • Project 3: Breeding of natural enemies of insect pests and effective methods of using indigenous natural enemies
  • Project 4: Development of environmentally friendly sterilization techniques against soil-borne diseases and nematodes and an assessment of its effectiveness
  • Project 5: New technologies for physical pest control using colored light or sound waves
  • Project 6A: Discovery of a plant resistance inducer with a new mode of action and development of new biological agents
  • Project 6B: New chemical research for the control of insect pests using semiochemicals
