Rationale
To "leave no one behind" from sustainable development, there is a need to improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers in the Asian and Pacific region by accelerating the transition from labor-intensive to data-driven agriculture. The rapid advancement of digital technologies into agriculture is expected to transform the entire food value chain and construct an optimal production system that can improve productivity and reduce negative environmental impact. To this end, countries in the Asian and Pacific region need to share and exchange information on smart agricultural technology development which they are working on to foster a shared awareness of the latest technologies and then explore ways to strengthen linkages and collaboration.
This symposium presents a wide range of ICTs in agriculture, from R&D results to practical techniques. The discussion will be conducted on measures for regional cooperation considering the characteristics in the Asia Monsoon region and on standardizations of the technology focusing on the next-generation environmental sensing, the utilization of artificial intelligence, and the construction of a data platform. It also discusses the challenges for balancing productivity and sustainability based on smart agricultural technologies.
The symposium also aims to build a platform in the Asian and Pacific region for smart agriculture technology development and further accelerate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
