13. Development of PCR-ELOSA assay for detection and serotyping of vesicular stomatitis viruses

Japanese

Vesicular stomatitis is an exotic disease for Japan. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infects wild animals as well as several domestic animals such a cattle, horses, and pigs. It has at least two major serotypes, the New Jersey serotype and the Indiana serotype. We developed a new molecular diagnostic assay which couples a PCR procedure to an enzyme-linked oligonucleotide sorbent assay (PCR-ELOSA). This PCR-ELOSA can not only detect viral RNA of both serotypes but also differentiate the two viral serotypes. The assay was shown to be more sensitive than the conventional RT-PCR method without cross-reaction.
