We carried out an experimental a foot-and-mouth disease infection in pigs using a virus isolated from the 2010 epidemic in Japan to analyze the clinical manifestations, antibody response, and virus shedding patterns in pigs. We found that the virus was virulent in pigs, producing synchronous disease in inoculated pigs and efficiently spreading via direct contact. These results are useful for epidemiological studies of the 2010 epidemic in Japan and for improving measures for controlling future foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Japan and elsewhere.
