Institute of Fruit Tree and Tea Science, NARO

Division of Fruit Tree Breeding Research

Fruits with pleasant appearance and delicious taste add color and richness to your life. 'Fuji' and 'Kosui' are representative cultivars of apples and Japanese pears, respectively, and a grape cultivar 'Shine Muscat' has gained more popularity in recent times. These are fruit cultivars developed by NARO. Division of Fruit Tree Breeding Research is promoting development with the goal of breeding excellent cultivars that are beneficial to both farmers and consumers.
In order to breed a new cultivar of fruit trees, a long time and a wide field are required for conventional cross breeding. Division of Fruit Tree Breeding Research is working to develop data-driven breeding and genome-editing technologies that can contribute to the efficiency of breeding and to the development of epoch-making cultivars that are difficult to achieve by cross breeding.
