Tohoku Agricultural Research Center, NARO

Department of Advanced Field Management Research

This department conducts research and development aimed at supporting the sustainable development of hilly and mountainous areas, as well as regions affected by the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. In hilly and mountainous areas, which account for approximately 40% of the total farmed land area in the Tohoku region, we are developing labor-saving and sustainable upland crop rotation systems. In response to the growing impacts of climate change, we are also breeding forage grass varieties with superior summer survivability and promoting the development and extension of stable forage crop production technologies.
In addition, in areas affected by TEPCO's FDNPP accident, we are working to advance technologies for evaluating the transfer of radioactive substances from soils to crops, to develop labor-saving technologies to address shortages of agricultural successors, and to establish income-stabilization technologies that contribute to strengthening regional production bases. Furthermore, we are promoting the demonstration and dissemination of farming resumption support models that implement these technologies.
