Tohoku Agricultural Research Center, NARO

Department of Horticulture and Field Crop Research

Our department aims to contribute to sustainable and stable off-season production and to improve the profitability of integrated paddy-based farming systems by effectively utilizing the climatic conditions of the Tohoku region.
For onions, we are working to establish a sustainable production system that reduces the risk of diseases such as downy mildew by combining set cultivation, new cultivars, and digital management systems. For strawberries, we are developing new cultivars adapted to high-temperature conditions, as well as disease management technologies that reduce the use of pesticides and fungicides. For wheat and barley, we are developing cultivars for confectionery use in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions and actively promoting "Natsukogane," a cultivar suitable for bread and Chinese noodles.
