The Department of Hilly and Mountainous Area Grazing Research conducts research and development to establish grazing-based Japanese Black cattle production systems as a low-cost livestock production approach for maintaining and effectively utilizing agricultural land while ensuring farm profitability in hilly and mountainous regions.
With a focus on Japanese Black cow-calf production systems and integrated cow-calf and finishing systems, the department develops and advances smart grazing technologies that utilize ICT devices and artificial intelligence. These technologies enable the monitoring and visualization of cattle behavior, location, and pasture utilization, thereby improving the efficiency of grazing and pasture management.
In addition, the department re-examines conventional fattening systems based on strict vitamin A restriction and evaluates their effects on animal growth and meat quality under moderated vitamin A restriction.
Through these efforts, the department aims to establish sustainable grazing-based Japanese Black cattle production systems that effectively utilize regional resources while addressing labor shortages.
