Horticulture and Field Crop Breeding Group

In the Kinki, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions managed by the Western Region Agricultural Center, the aging population and proportion of hilly and mountainous areas are higher compared to that of national average. As a result, local farming has become a small-scale production area regardless of the type of agricultural product. In order to maintain such small-scale production areas, our group is conducting the following research on local specialty vegetables and upland crops with the aim of ensuring a stable supply of agricultural products demanded by suburban consumers and actual users.

  • Development of low-cost cultivation technology aimed at promoting growth and improving quality by adjusting the light environment and temperature conditions for local specialty vegetables.
  • Cultivation of soybean and naked barley varieties that will lead to improved profitability for producers with quality that meets the needs of consumers.
  • Scientific elucidation of nutritional and health functionality of local specialty agricultural products and development of effective utilization technology for them.
