Sustainable Development for Pasture-based Beef Cattle Farming

warc

Background and Objectives

With the conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement and the phased reduction of tariffs, it has become crucial for the Japanese beef cattle farming to boost productivity. Some of the practical ways to realize improvement of labor productivity and cost reduction of beef cattle production include reduced dependence on imported grain feed and the utilization of domestic land resources such as unused farm lands. This symposium will focus on the pasture-based beef cattle farming in New Zealand which is recognized for being competitive globally. The productivity gap in beef cattle farming between Japan and New Zealand and strategies to address the gap such as winter grazing using fodder kale will be discussed.

The main objectives of this symposium are as follows: (1) to identify issues that must be addressed in Japanese beef cattle production, (2) to understand the mutual strength, weakness and opportunities for beef cattle farming in both countries, and (3) to find common research areas for sustainable development.
