Enjoying at Spring Open Day 2017-Headquarters, NARO(HQ/NARO)

Date of visit: April 21st & 22nd, 2017
Weather: Sunny

Hello, everyone! This is Narorin♪
In this Narorin Report or Naroripo, I will tell you about the Open Day-Spring 2017 at "Tsukuba Agricultural Research Hall". Do you know what I did this time?

I played the NARO version of "karuta" with the kids! Karuta is a Japanese card game with a reading card set and a playing card set. The playing cards with pictures and names of cultivars or technologies developed by NARO are spread on the floor. A reciter reads a description in the reading card and the player who touches the corresponding playing card first gets the card. By playing this game, the kids can get to know more about NARO.

And not only kids, but adults also enjoyed playing this traditional game♪
The karuta corner was very lively. Some people had to wait for their turn to play♪ The participants received a leaflet of cultivars and technology on Karuta and Narorin Seal as souvenir. I enjoyed playing karuta with many people.

There were lots of other exciting corners too♪
As I felt hungry, I ate samples of baked sweet potato in the corner organized by the Institute of Crop Science, NARO(NICS)! It was a popular corner with a long queue every time.

I also tasted a new rice cultivar called "Hoshijirushi" which was very delicious!

At the Institute of Agricultural Machinery, NARO(IAM/NARO) corner, various interesting instruments were displayed. With a thermal camera, infrared (thermal energy) light was reflected.

At the Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science, NARO(NILGS) corner, I could measure the hardness of the egg shell. Just place the egg in the instrument and switch on!
At the Institute of Agrobiological Sciences, NARO(NIAS) corner, I tried to extract DNA from broccoli. Various types of silkworms were also displayed!

At the Central Region Agricultural Research Center, NARO(CARC/NARO) corner, mini lectures were given on various themes were presented. Dr. Hayashi of the Institute of Agro-Environmental Sciences, NARO(NIAES), who took me to Antarctica also gave a mini lecture.

I was very happy to see lots of visitors♪
Thank you everyone for visiting us at NARO♪ Let's meet again in the Summer Open day!

Now I'm wondering where to go next...
