Joetsu City is situated in the southwest part of Niigata Prefecture, and the plain area surrounded by the mountains and the coast is blessed with varied topography and abundant nature throughout the four seasons. While this area is one of the heaviest snowfall area in Japan, the summer is extremely hot with the temperature over 40 degrees centigrade. It was well flourished as an important point of transportation with Naoetsu Port in the sea, Hokuriku Motor Highways and Joshinetsu Motor Highways on land. Hokuriku Shinkansen line started its operation in 2005.
