Institute of Agricultural Machinery, NARO

Department of Safety Evaluation and Standardization

The Department of Safety Evaluation and Standardization is working on "safety inspections" for the latest agricultural robots including marketable various agricultural machinery and equipment such as tractors and rice transplanters, "OECD tests" for roll-over protective structures (safety cab or frame), and developing safety technologies, advancement and normalization or international standardization or others of evaluation testing methods and equipment.
"Safety inspection" is our unique certification system that has been implemented by National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) since the fiscal year 2018, in place of type inspection and safety assessment of agricultural machines that have already been abolished. This is not an insubstantial name change of the certification system from the old system. While positively striving for consistency with international safety standards that will continue to be strengthened in the future, we will contribute to improving and disseminating agricultural machinery and eliminating agricultural work accidents through performance evaluations targeting all types of agricultural machinery and equipment. At the same time, we will promote "normalization and international standardization" to enhance Japan's industrial competitiveness from a global viewpoint, in addition to technology developments to improve safety and reliability, and upgrade research for methods of evaluation tests and equipment corresponding to them.
Department of Safety Evaluation and Standardization will form the Safety Evaluation Group to carry out these tasks, and promote social implementation of the results by setting specific research issues as well as certification tasks and standardization tasks.
