Division of Environmental Chemical Research

There are chemical substances in the environment that have adverse effects on health or inhibit the growth of crops. Therefore, at crop production sites, it is necessary to appropriately control such chemicals by preventing them from being excessively absorbed by crops.

In the Division of Environmental Chemical Research, we are working on the development of technology that can suppress the absorption of hazardous elements such as arsenic and cadmium, radioactive isotopes, and agricultural chemicals remaining in the soil, etc. into crops through the elucidation of their dynamics in the agricultural environment, and produce safe and healthy crops.

Major research targets include Identification of genes that inhibit the absorption and accumulation of harmful chemicals and development of lines that carry these genes, Elucidation of the dynamics of radionuclides in the atmosphere, crops and soil, Suppression of the absorption of harmful chemical substances into crops through agricultural management such as material application and water management, the Rapid detection of agricultural chemicals contained in compost and environmental water, and Development of technologies to promote the decomposition of organic chemical substances in soil.
