15. Effects of pig pneumonia following experimentally induced infection wit Aujeszky's disease virus and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

Japanese

Nine pigs were inoculated endobronchially with A. pleuropneumoniae (App) six days after being infected with Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV). Nine pigs developed more severe clinical symptoms than control pigs and 4 died within 3 days after following App inoculation. All pigs given both agents developed hemorrhagic pleuropneumonia more severely than observed in pigs given only one of the agents. ADV infection would thus appear to eliminate defense against pulmonary antibacteria, with the consequent rapid proliferation of App and death of the host due to overwhelming bacterial infection.
