Two wild-type strains of Aujeszky's disease virus were inoculated into closed loops in the jejunum and ileum of four specific pathogen-free pigs. These viruses produced enteric lesions on postinoculation day 2 to 4, and viral antigen was initially detected in the subepithelial macrophages of the dome of Peyer's patches and subsequently extended into the lymphoid follicles and myenteric plexuses. However, one mutant (ara-T-resistant) strain of Aujeszky's disease virus did not produce the enteric lesion.
