In the medical and healthcare fields, the development of groundbreaking treatments and diagnostic methods, as well as measures against livestock infectious diseases, are expected to lead to the creation of biomaterials that maximize the functions of cells, tissues, and whole animals through modification. In our department, we aim to develop innovative materials utilizing biological functions and to establish technologies that can contribute widely—from agriculture, livestock, and food industries to medical and healthcare sectors. Our research focuses on three areas: (1) the production of genetically modified pig models using pigs with physiological and anatomical similarities to humans, along with the development of technologies for their use in medicine and other fields; (2) advancing livestock disease control by using cultured livestock cells and omics analysis technologies for vaccine development and improvement of genetic disease resistance in livestock, and (3) development of novel biomaterials for broad applications including medicine and the food industry by elucidating the functions of organisms with tolerance to extreme environments such as desiccation.
