Weed Control Group

The Weed Control Group conducts research and development on weed control technologies with the aim of reducing agricultural damage caused by weeds and preventing their invasion of farmland. We have advanced our understanding of the ecological characteristics of difficult-to-control weeds, such as invasive morning glories (Ipomoea spp.), weedy rice, and alligatorweed (Alternanthera philoxeroides), and have developed efficient control technologies based on these findings. We have also worked on developing identification programs that enable the early detection and control of high-risk weeds at the seedling stage, as well as constructing models to assess the risk of weed invasion and establishment for specific crop types. We are working to systematize integrated control technologies for hard-to-control weeds, and are verifying the effect of reducing weed risks by crop rotation, both through model development and field application. We also conduct research to meet administrative needs, such as surveys on the actual status of weeds following revisions to the Plant Protection Act.
