Department of Epidemiology and Pathophysiology consists of three research groups located at Tsukuba Headquarters: Epidemiology Group, Pathophysiology Group, and Pathology Group.
Each group conducts research aimed at strengthening animal disease surveillance systems and developing early detection technologies through the application of data science, thereby contributing to improved productivity in the livestock industry.
Specifically, for important livestock infectious diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza, risk assessments and simulations of disease transmission based on epidemiological analyses are conducted to propose evidence-based disease control measures.
In addition, we are developing early disease detection and diagnostic support systems using AI-based image analysis, and promoting their implementation and evaluation in public research institutes and farms. Furthermore, a digital pathology network has been established in collaboration with livestock hygiene service centers and Animal Quarantine Service to improve the efficiency and accuracy of pathological diagnosis.
