National Institute of Animal Health, NARO

Department of Viral Diseases

Department of Viral Diseases consists of three research groups located at Tsukuba Headquarters: Zoonotic Virus Group, Viral Pathogenesis Group, and Viral Ecology and Control Group.
In addition to zoonotic diseases of major importance to animal and public health, such as avian and swine influenza, each group conducts research on viral infections affecting livestock and poultry in Japan.
Specifically, these activities include elucidating pathogenic mechanisms and disease progression, as well as developing diagnostic methods and effective preventive measures such as vaccines.
In particular, field investigations are carried out in collaboration with livestock hygiene service centers and commercial farms to facilitate the practical application of research outcomes. Furthermore, collaborative research based on the One Health approach is promoted in partnership with domestic and international institutions in the fields of environmental and public health.
