Zoonotic Virus Group

Zoonotic Virus Group focuses on influenza A viruses, which pose a serious threat to the poultry industry and carry the potential to spark future pandemics. Our work spans both diagnostic services for avian influenza and research that bridges basic science and practical application.
To reduce the workload in diagnostic laboratories, we develop highly accurate, rapid, and easy-to-use genetic tests for avian influenza viruses. Through genome analysis of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses isolated from wild birds and poultry, we evaluate the transmission risk to humans and mammals, and investigate possible routes of introduction into Japan. Using high-containment (BSL3) facilities, we also study the pathogenicity of HPAI viruses and conduct foundational research on recombinant vaccine technologies.
In addition, we investigate the prevalence of swine influenza viruses and estimate associated economic losses, generating scientific insights that directly support field-level disease control.
