Viral Pathogenesis Group

Viral Pathogenesis Group conducts a wide range of research—from basic to applied studies—focused on viral diseases of cattle that pose persistent challenges in livestock production. With particular attention to bovine enzootic leukosis and bovine respiratory disease complex, which are widely observed on farms, we analyze the biological characteristics of pathogens as well as the immunological and pathophysiological responses of cattle in a comprehensive and systematic manner. Through these efforts, we aim to deepen the understanding of disease mechanisms and, based on this knowledge, generate practical insights that contribute to the development of diagnostic methods and disease control strategies. In parallel, we place strong emphasis on the perspective of diagnostic laboratories and are actively developing methods to reduce the workload of personnel. Furthermore, we conduct diagnostic investigations of a wide range of pathogens, including viruses belonging to the families Retroviridae, Herpesviridae, Flaviviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Pneumoviridae, and Poxviridae that infect cattle, as well as viral diseases of horses, sheep, and goats, and transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. By utilizing these specimens, we advance not only research but also the monitoring of disease prevalence within Japan.
