In the Division of Infectious Animal Disease Research, we are conducting research on bacterial and viral infections in livestock, poultry, and honeybees, as well as prion diseases in livestock. In order to prevent the outbreak of these diseases in Japan, we are conducting research on the development of diagnostic methods and preventive methods such as vaccines, along with the research about the pathogenicity of pathogens, the mechanism of disease occurrence and epidemiological analysis.

Electron microscopy of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae inoculated intraperitoneally into mice (left).
Pathogenic strains were observed not to be phagocytosed by phagocytes, and it was revealed for the first time that Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae possess a capsule(bacterial).
Detection of PED virus antigen in cultured cells by indirect immunofluorescence (right).
Only infected cells appear stained green.
