18. Micro detection of abnormal isoforms of prion protein (PrPSc) by immuno-polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Japanese

Immuno-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, for the detection of abnormal isoform of prion protein (PrPSc) was established. This technique made it possible to detect approximately >6 pg of PrPSc, and showed 100 times higher sensitivity than western blotting, which has been routinely used for the diagnosis of prion diseases. The method is thought to be further applicable not only to the micro detection of PrPSc but also to the diagnosis of prion diseases.
