Pasteurella multocida strains from pigs were divided into 7 protein types by analysis of densitometer traces of the polypeptide band patterns in SDS-PAGE. Serogroup A strains of non-toxigenic P. multocida, mainly isolated from the lungs with pneumonia or pleuritis, were classified into protein types 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. Serogroup D strains of toxigenic P. multocida, mainly isolated from the nasal cavities of pigs, were classified into protein types 4 and 7.
