Division of Core Technology for Pest Control Research

Nearly 30% of global food production is lost due to pest damage. In recent years, the risk of new pests invading from overseas has increased due to climate change and the increase in the traffic of people and goods according to globalization. Also the agricultural damage caused by pests migrated from overseas has also increased. On the other hand, in pest control, it is necessary to reduce the burden on the environment and farmers. Also, it is necessary to implement pest control methods that meet the standards of the partner country while exporting agricultural products. Given such background, in the Division of Core Technology for Pest Control Research, with a view to ensuring food security and avoiding impacts on regional economies through the early detection and control of high-risk pests and transboundary pests (Pests and diseases that may cause serious damage to crops if they spread in Japan), we will establish high-precision migration prediction technology and control technology for overseas migratory pests. We will also establish a platform for digitizing information on high-risk pests and transboundary pests and utilizing information via the internets. In addition, we will build core technologies for cutting-edge pesticide-free control technologies, such as new physical control methods, with the aim of zero pest damage.
