Plants sense their surrounding environment (light, temperature, etc.) and regulate the progression of each stage of their life cycle—from germination through vegetative growth, flowering and reproductive growth, to senescence. Furthermore, they have developed diverse adaptive mechanisms to cope with abiotic and biotic stresses, thereby establishing survival strategies. In the Department of Plant Genetics and Physiology Research, we aim to increase the production of ornamental crops and vegetables, ensure planned, stable production and supply, and expand demand and exports. To achieve these goals, we investigate environmental responses and elucidate the mechanisms underlying these responses using physiological, genetic and molecular biological approaches. Based on these findings, we will develop breeding materials, leading cultivars, and new technologies that contribute to breeding, production, distribution, and consumption.
