The scope of the research program of the Solanaceous Breeding Group includes development of solanaceous vegetable varieties such as tomato, eggplant and pepper, as well as development of breeding technologies such as DNA markers facilitating the breeding. In recent years, climate change in Japan has brought significant yield losses caused by heat damage and pests and diseases. In our group, heat-resistant and pest/disease resistant varieties are under development. We are also developing cultivars suitable for smart agriculture such as vegetables for mechanical harvesting.
