Protected Cultivation Vegetable and Flower Breeding Group

Our group is in charge of the task "Breeding protected cultivation vegetables and flowers for data-driven production management system." Our breeding targets are tomato, eggplant, sweet pepper, cucumber, melon, strawberry, Eustoma, dahlia, and so on, which are mainly cultivated in facilities. Our goal is to breed varieties containing large amounts of health functional substances to improve people's health, as well as varieties that are resistant to diseases and insects. Our main breeding targets are: bacterial wilt resistant tomato, eggplant and sweet pepper, eggplant with high acetylcholine content, cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus resistant cucumber and melon, and Fusarium root rot resistant Eustoma. In addition, we are carrying out breeding programs in line with present social conditions, for example, tomato suitable for hydroponic culture under meticulous environmental control, spineless eggplant which reduces stress for farmers, seed propagation type strawberry which has high proliferation efficiency and resistance to diseases and insects, long-vase-life dahlia to extend the duration of enjoying the flowers, and so on. Moreover, we are actively collaborating with private companies to develop commercial varieties using new breeding materials obtained from our breeding programs.
