The virus group has focused on the elucidation of the molecular interactions between viruses and natural hosts that influence the establishment of virus diseases and modulating mechanisms of the host defense systems.
Currently there are no effective treatments for viral diseases in domestic animals (livestock and poultry). Once an outbreak of a highly contagious viral disease occurs, the livestock industries are devastated. Early detection and precise diagnosis will be key elements for prevention and control of viral diseases. The scope of our research also includes the development of novel diagnostic methods and vaccines necessary for viral disease control measures. In addition, our group develops cooperative relations with the local livestock hygiene centers to improve animal health in Japan.
